Octagon boxes are typically used in ceilings to support light fixtures, as a junction box, or as a box to house a receptacle. Light fixtures are mounted either using a round mud ring or they are mounted directly to the two cover ears. When a fixture is mounted directly to the cover ears, the box is typically mounted flush with the drywall.
